River bank rescue near Ayton

Fire fighters and police had to rescue a man who had fallen into the river just north of the Ayton Bridge.

The situation developed Thursday night after police were called about a person in mental distress.

When police arrived, the victim fled the area, climbed down a steep incline and fell into the river.

The Ayton fire department, West Grey Police and Bruce County OPP started a search and found the man on the opposite bank of the river at the bottom of a steep bank.

The victim was able to get himself out of the cold water on his own.

Police and Firefighters then rappelled down the steep bank to provide first aid until the Hanover Fire Rescue Team arrived.

The team extracted the victim and he was then transferred to hospital for further assessment and treatment.
