Huron East mayor explains funding request turn down

The Mayor of Huron East Mayor says he has a couple of concerns with the Huron Residential Hospice's recent funding request of the county.

The request was for an interest-free loan of $1 million dollar loan to be repaid over ten years.

Bernie MacLellan says his first concern is that health care is provincial matter and he doesn't think the county should be adding a new project to the projects they're already funding because of a shortfall in Provincial funding.

MacLellan says his second concern is that the loan is to cover operating expenses, rather than a one-time only capital project.

"Certainly part of my concern is the fact that this is becoming operating money and it's not a grant to do a one-time only thing because they are, at the moment, not able to raise all of their funding to do their operations," said MacLellan.

The county turned the request down at its last budget meeting.
