Wellington County man charged after driving with child on lap

A Wellington County man has been charged after allegedly being caught driving while suspended with a small child on his lap.

Officers pulled over a man at about 7:15 a.m. on Friday in Main Street in Erin, after the child was seen riding on his lap.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and discovered the man was driving with a suspended licence.

When asked why the child was not in a car seat, police said the man indicated that he did not want to wake the child up.

A 36-year-old Erin man is now charged and will appear in court in Guelph on April 17.

OPP want to remind motorists that airbags can be lifesavers, however, they can also be fatal when occupants are not seated and buckled in properly. People most at risk from airbag deployment are children and small adults because their bodies can't take the force. The safest position for a child in a motor vehicle is in the centre rear seat using the proper seatbelt assembly.
