UPDATE: Suspect identified in Listowel incident

A 21-year-old Minto Township man has been charged following a Friday incident in Listowel.

Perth County OPP officers set up containment around the home on Main Street in Listowel between Barber Avenue and Victoria Avenue Friday morning in connection with a wanted person.  Officers from the West Region Emergency Response Team, West Region Tactics and Rescue Unit, West Region Canine and Crisis Negotiators responded also responded to the scene.

The area was blocked off for most of the day until just after 6 p.m. when police said the man had been taken into custody without incident.

The suspect, identified as Nathan Chambers, was due for a bail hearing Saturday. He has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, failure to comply with a probation order and two counts of failure to comply with recognizance.

Investigators said there was no direct threat to the public during the incident, but wanted to ensure the public stayed away from the area. Three local schools were put under a precautionary "hold and secure" through most of the day but were dismissed from classes as usual.

The charges against Chambers have yet to be proven in court.
