Blyth welcomes an ogre, a donkey and a princess

The theatre at the Blyth Memorial Community Hall has been transformed into a swamp with an ogre, donkey and princess gracing the stage.

Shrek The Musical Junior opens Saturday night, a Studio 410 production.

Paige Ballagh and her sister Devan opened up Studio 410 in Teeswater in 2015 and this performance is their fourth following up on last year's musical, Legally Blonde Junior.

"We like to base our musicals off the talent we have," said Ballagh. "Who was in the musical the previous year, who we know is interested and the people we had interested fit perfectly in the show and it is such a fun one that we thought it is finally the year to do it."

Ballagh said this year they were able to add some bigger sets with the room they have in Blyth.

"We rented sets from KW Musical Productions, and they're big, beautiful sets. They're the nicest sets we ever had our hands on, we are so fortunate to have them this year," said Ballagh.

Ballagh says their cast and crew consists of kids and adults of all ages and there was an opportunity to bring the colourful musical to life. The play had its first two shows Thursday in front of a school audience with two more performances on Friday.

Opening night is Saturday at 7 p.m.

"I am so excited to head into opening night. The stakes get a bit higher and everyone is playing off each other and playing off the audience," said Ballagh. "It's always so exciting to open it to general admission."

There are four more shows to follow; 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1, and 2 p.m. on March 2 and 3.
