Committees to study future of Howson Dam and Museum in Wingham

Two new committees have been formed by North Huron council to make recommendations for the future of the Howson Dam and the North Huron Museum.

Both located in Wingham, the two issues have long been sore spots for some residents, but applause broke out as council voted to empower citizens, and let them have a stronger say in the process.

In July of 2018, North Huron voted to work with a citizens group called the Howson Dam and Pond Committee, however, presenter Andy McBride requested council initiate more discussion on how they can be of assistance with a repair project.

McBride is pushing for the historic water level of the area to be re-established, and "the function and appearance of the dam be improved drastically".

Earlier this year, the owners of the former train station in Wingham offered to transfer ownership of a portion of the property to the municipality in exchange for $1, something Wingham BIA Secretary Dave Tiffin called a "one time opportunity".

BIA President Doug Kuyvenhoven said the new Wingham Museum Committee of Council is "ready to roll up our sleeves", noting it will take two to three years to complete the move to the new building.

There are over 12,000 artifacts in the current North Huron Museum. The former North Huron council opted out of a proposed multi-million-dollar project to renovate and upgrade the historic Museum building in early 2018.  It's been closed since then.
