Working smoke alarms notify Port Elgin occupants of fire

Fire, smoke and water damage to an apartment unit in Port Elgin has been estimated at $100,000.

The Saugeen Shores Fire Department and Bruce County EMS responded to a fire at 9 a.m. Monday in a residential unit of Skyline Apartments on Waterloo Street.

There was heavy smoke coming from a third-floor window of the unit. The fire was quickly extinguished and damage was contained to the single unit. The tenants of the apartment were not home at the time.

Two pets died in the fire.

All other residents have been able to return to their units.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it's not considered suspicious.

"Because of working smoke alarms, the other residents of the building were alerted to the danger quickly," said Fire Prevention Officer Rob Atkinson. "This led to a safe and timely evacuation of the building."
