Women and men brave bitter cold for Goderich march

Close to 100 women and supporters marched around the Square in Goderich Saturday afternoon.

Similar marches were held in cities and towns across Canada, the U.S., and other parts of the world.

Alisha Schilbe, the co-chair of the Huron/Bruce Chapter of Women’s March Canada, said Women’s March Canada focuses on issues such as income inequality, violence against women, missing and murdered Indigenous women, reproductive rights, and human rights.

Schilbe said domestic violence is not as visible here as it as in larger urban centres, but it's still here.

"I do think that in rural communities women are less likely to come forward with stories of assault or domestic violence. Women are still scared to talk," she said. "It is very hard for women in small communities to leave abusive relationships."
