One person has to be treated by paramedics after a fire broke out in a residential unit in Southampton.
The Saugeen Shores Fire Department and Saugeen Shores police responded to the early morning fire on Monday at 100 Grosvenor Street. The single unit fire was quickly contained and extinguished before it could spread to other units.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation by Bruce County EMS at the scene.
The blaze caused an estimated $40,000 in damage with minor smoke damage to surrounding units. The tenant of the unit has been charged with failing to maintain a smoke alarm as well as other offences under the Fire Code.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“Tenants need to be aware of their responsibility to comply with the fire code, including ensuring a working smoke alarm is installed,” said Fire Prevention Officer Rob Atkinson. “It is the tenant’s responsibly to notify the property owner if the alarm is not working.”
