North Perth will allow cannabis stores

North Perth council has voted to allow the retail sale of cannabis in the municipality.

Council considered multiple reasons not to opt out, including the fact that it is a legal substance, and will be sold under strict licensing provisions. That includes not allowing stores within 150 metres of schools, and not selling to anyone under 19 years of age.

Residents also have access to legal pot bought online and possibly in neighbouring municipalities, as well.

North Perth expects at least $10,000 in extra funding to help with implementation costs.

On December 13, 2018, the province announced a phased approach to private retail stores, with the initial phase having up to 25 licences being issued throughout Ontario to operators to open retail stores on April 1, 2019.
