Snowy Owl spotted in Perth County

A conservation expert says this is the perfect time of year to see a Snowy Owl.

Snowy Owls have been spotted recently in several locations around Perth County including Dublin and Listowel.

Ausable Bayfield Conservation Spokesperson Kate Monk said Snowy Owls are native to Arctic regions.

"A snowy owl is a migratory owl, so it comes down into our area in the fall and the winter, depending on what the food conditions are like further north," said Monk.

Although the bird is not endangered, the International Union for Conservation of Nature recently upgraded the Snowy Owl to a conservation status of vulnerable with populations estimated at about 28,000 individuals. That's a steep decline from previous estimates of 200,000 birds.
