UPDATE: Victim identified in fatal South Huron crash

OPP have identified the victim of a fatal crash in South Huron.

Officers were called shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday to a location on Whalen Line east of London Road. A passerby discovered a heavily damaged vehicle off the roadway in a field. The South Huron Fire Department and Huron County Paramedic Services also responded to the scene.

Investigators say that the driver was traveling westbound on Whalen Line in a full-size sedan when somehow the vehicle went off the road at high speed. It hit two trees, then rolled multiple times.

The lone occupant, identified by the OPP as Zachary Smith, 26, from St. Paul, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Whalen Line between London Rd. and Morrison Line was closed for several hours while investigators from the OPP West Region Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) Team investigated. It was reopened around 3:30 p.m.

A post-mortem is scheduled to be performed on Sunday to determine what happened to the driver.
