Charges after car flees RIDE stop

Two people, one from Saugeen Shores and another from Arran-Elderslie, face charges after a vehicle took off from a RIDE stop and hit a police cruiser.

It happened in Guelph on November 7. A car was stopped and after a short talk, police asked the driver to turn off the vehicle because he did not provide a driver's licence and gave a false verbal identification.

But instead, the driver put the car in gear and drove off as officers jumped out of the way.

Shortly after, a fully marked OPP cruiser was hit by the car but with concerns that pursuing the vehicle would put public safety at risk, police stopped the chase.

Wellington County OPP have now charged two people.

Michael Kidd, 37, of Saugeen Shores, faces multiple charges including; Obstruct Police Officer, Personation with intent to avoid arrest, two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous operation, flight while pursued by a peace officer, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Kidd is also charged with driving while under suspension.

Sarah Jane Posthumus, 32, of Arran-Elderslie has also been charged with two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, and failing to comply with recognizance.

Both were held in custody for a bail hearing.
