Upper Grand schools work to prevent bullying

Schools in the Upper Grand District School Board are marking Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week.

UGDSB Child and Youth Counsellors are working with each school in developing and delivering the programs.

The numerous activities are aimed at raising awareness about bullying and its effect on students.

Classroom and school-wide activities include slogan contests, teacher swaps, having older students read to younger students and creative activities that show the damaging effect bullying can have on students. There will also be special guest presenters and assemblies.

The board said staff will teach students about the different forms bullying can take and continue to promote positive school climates that support student learning and well-being.

Bullying is defined as “a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person's body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation.”
