Health Unit Merger Moves Ahead

Huron County Board of Health Chair Tyler Hessel says the amalgamation of the Huron County and Perth County health units is ready to move forward.

Hessel says they have received confirmation from the Ministry of Health that their request for $1.6-million in funding has been approved, and that was critical to the amalgamation moving forward.

“After we did the consulting and figured out what the initiating heavy impacts were going to be it was tough for either of our boards to suggest that we could put any more money onto our taxpayers. We're extremely pleased that the Ministry of Health has decided to fund the program to its full amount,” said Hessel.

Hessel expects a transition team to be put together by the end of May and an amalgamation completed by January of 2020.

“It took us three years to get where we are. A consultants report mentioned that it would take about two years to do. We have done everything we can possibly to get documentation ready for the transition team so it'll be up to them to finalize some terms of reference and a few other odds and ends but I feel like we're ready to go,” added Hessel.
