Grey Highlands Mayor Continues Fight To Save Beavercrest School

The Mayor of Grey Highlands is upset with the Bluewater District School Board.

The board's accommodation review process continues to target Beavercrest School in Markdale for closure.

Mayor Paul McQueen says when he heard the news the school was still on the block he was disappointed.

"So disheartening not only myself and our council but also the community group that has put so much work into this the local Markdale ARC the people that have done so much thinking outside the box with solution,"says McQueen.

The Municipality of Grey Highlands previously offered the Bluewater District School Board $50,000 or more per year for four years to support the Beavercrest school so that it can remain open.

McQueen says the recommendation ignores the fact that Chapman’s Ice Cream continues to grow and that the Municipality of Grey Highlands also has a number of active developments underway, as well as several others in the final stages of the planning process.

"I'm not prepared to give up, we're going to fight this, we're going to move on this so we're going to make reasons why this school should stay," says McQueen. "The option of no school is not there."

There is still another round of public consultation on the Markdale school closure before Bluewater School Board trustees make a final decision in April.
