Cycling Advocate Pleased with Huron County Cycling Strategy

Cycling advocate Julie Sawchuck says she's very pleased with the strategy advanced by the Huron County Cycling Strategy Steering committee at this week's county council meeting.

Sawchuck was left paralyzed from the waist down after being struck by a car while riding her bike about sixteen months ago.

She says she believes the strategy is a very well laid out plan and if the committee is able to implement the action items on their list of priorities the result will be cyclists will be much safer.

Sawchuck adds one thing she'd like to see is more discussion about the different kinds of bikes, including mountain bikes and just plain pleasure bikes as opposed to racing bikes that are common on Huron County roads.

She says there needs to be a greater effort to find or create places like bike parks where kids can ride their mountain bikes without having to ride on roads or sidewalks and where older people can ride their bikes too.

Sawchuck adds she's thrilled that the county is supporting the strategy and says she's not sure what other counties are doing but believes Huron County is leading the way.
