Bruce Power says a joint study has determined life extension activities and the continuing operation of Bruce Power will create thousands of jobs and inject billions into Ontario's economy for decades.
The economic impact study, "Affordable Power. Jobs and Growth." found the site will create and sustain 22,000 direct and indirect jobs per year through 2064.
The vice president of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Ontario, Ian Howcroft, says ensuring a reliable supply of carbon free affordable nuclear energy for decades to come is especially important to the manufacturing sector.
“Nuclear power is reliable and competitively priced,” Ian Howcroft said. “Bruce Power, which provides 30 per cent of the province’s electricity, will continue to provide Ontarians with affordable,
reliable electricity, which is especially important for our manufacturing sector.”
The project to extend the life of units 3-8 will create and sustain 5,000 direct and indirect jobs annually.
It will also create $4-billion in direct and indirect spending on things like operational equipment, supplies and labour income.
The study is an update of a study released in 2014.
Refurbishment of Bruce Power Units 3-8 began in January, and continue to be on time and on budget.
