Electoral Reform To Be Discussed In Goderich

The topic of electoral reform will be discussed in Goderich Wednesday night.

Western University political science professor Laura Stephenson will be the guest speaker. Stephenson will make a brief presentation about various electoral reform options and will attempt to explain some of the perceived benefits and drawbacks of each option.

While the night is being organized by the Huron-Bruce Federal Liberal Association, organizers are going to great lengths to make sure the event is non-partisan.

The audience will be divided up into small groups for a discussion of a number of questions touching on electoral reform.

Some of the questions that groups may be asked to consider include:

• What do you think about the current system for electing members of parliament (benefits/flaws)? Do you feel that votes are fairly translated? • Do you have a preferred alternative to the current system? What specific features are important to you in an electoral system (for example local representation, proportionality, simplicity, legitimacy etc.)? • Why do you think many Canadians choose not to engage in the democratic process? How would you encourage participation? • Do you feel that it should it be mandatory to cast a ballot? • Should Canadians be able to vote online? Or would you prefer to maintain current voting practices?

The town hall on electoral reform will be held at the Goderich District Collegiate Institute tomorrow night at 7pm.

Allan Thompson, communications chair for the Huron-Bruce federal Liberals, discusses Wednesday night's session on electoral reform:
