Huron County Food Banks Ready For Thanksgiving

With the Thanksgiving weekend just days away, local food banks are gearing up to do their best.

MaryEllen Zeilman, executive director of the Huron County Foodbank Distribution Centre near Exeter, says while some food bank users are able to get back on their feet, many people still rely on local food banks.

"It's getting harder and harder for two parent working families to make ends meet as things continue to rise in cost and so they are seeing more families and it's also very difficult for seniors to make ends meet," says Zeilman.

Zeilman says they've received a few generous donations over the past couple of weeks including lots of fresh produce and turkeys, which will be given out to needy families in time for Thanksgiving.

The Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre supplies all food banks within the County of Huron and currently there are roughly 18,000 visits annually from people who rely on these food banks; of that number, roughly 6,500 are children.

"Some of those (visits) would be more than once a year and some of them would be just once a year," adds Zeilman.

You can visit the Huron County Distribution Centre's website for more information on how to donate, help out or learn more about what they do in Huron County.
