Brockton Group Working To Bring Refugee Family To Canada

A group of volunteers is hoping to raise enough money to bring a refugee family to Bruce County.

The Brockton and Area Refugee Team is a group of 12 volunteers who are working in cooperation with the Mennonite Central Committee to make this a reality.

Amy Kieffer is a member of the Brockton and Area Refugees Team and she says Council was very open to the idea at Monday's regular meeting.

"The reaction from council was extremely positive, they asked that we keep them informed as things progress and they really commended us for taking this on and for looking to the possibility of bringing a family of new Canadians to Brockton," says Kieffer.

But there is one hurdle the group must clear, and that's raising the necessary funds in order to bring their idea to fruition.

So far, the group has raised $12,000 and they hope to kick off their fundraising campaign this fall starting next month.

"The first of our fundraising events is coming up on October 30 and that will be an awareness building dinner and auction," adds Kieffer.

Their overall fundraising goal is $40,000.

The Brockton and Area Refugees Team is hoping to welcome their family of new Canadians by next summer.
