Huron County Joins SWIFT Program

Huron County council has agreed to be part of the program that will bring broadband to all of Southwestern Ontario.

Participation in the SWIFT program comes with a left price. The county has agreed to pay this year's fee of $30,000 for being a partner in the program as well as committing to $680,000 over five years as the county's share of the cost of the roll-out of the program.

County CAO Brenda Orchard points out the payment of the $680,000 is conditional on how the program is rolled out and that councillors are confident there will be some benefits for Huron County.

Orchard explains a lot of the details of the plan are still missing and councillors want some of idea of when Huron County residents would see some benefits from the program before they're willing to spend $680,000 of taxpayer money.

Orchard adds they fully expects there will be benefits to Huron County residents, but they want to see more details before they cut a cheque.
