South Bruce Peninsula Lawsuit

A private civil lawsuit turned public in the South Bruce Peninsula council chambers.

Pat Varley approached Councillor Craig Gammie during a break in Tuesday's council meeting and handed him a large yellow envelope, telling Gammie he was being served with court papers.

Varley says she and Orma Lyttle are being sued by Gammie and they were informing Gammie of their intent to countersue, though she declined to go into specifics of the dispute.

Gammie says he's suing the pair for $25,000 over the finances of the Amabel Property Owners Association, of which he was formerly a board member.

"They used to be members, they used to board members, as was I, and we had a bunch of money [that] belonged to the association and they purported to dissolve the organization, but they didn't dissolve it and they took the money with them, and I've sued for it," says Gammie.

Varley says Gammie's history of turning to the courts is part of the reason why they're countersuing.

"Hopefully his bullying will stop throughout this town. He has done nothing but sue people and put them on edge in regards to any opposition," says Varley. "People are just fed up with it, we're all fed up with it."

A court date has not yet been set.
