Grey-Bruce Health Confirms Case Of Hepatitis A

An investigation into 14 cases of Hepatitis A linked to frozen fruit sold exclusively at Costco stores across five provinces continues, and one of those cases is right here in Midwestern Ontario.

Bob Hart is the program manager with the Grey Bruce Health Unit, and says they are looking into a case of the disease within the Grey-Bruce region.

"One of those in the investigation is a resident of the Grey-Bruce area," says Hart. "That person has no known consumption of the berries that were sold at COSTCO but they do fit in with the timelines of the outbreak which is back to February of this year and they also have no travel related history because often people with Hep-A will pick it up when tey're travelling somewhere else."

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a recall earlier this week for Nature's Touch Organic Berry Cherry Blend frozen fruit which was sold in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Hart says the big issue is the fact that the product is frozen berries meaing they could potentially stay in someone's freezer for a long period of time.

Anyone who may have frozen berries from Costco inside their freezer should take a look and see if they are part of the recall by checking against the CFIA website by clicking HERE.
