Concern Over Hensall Heritage Hall Renovations

Some Bluewater Councillors have expressed concerns over the cost over-run of the renovation of the Hensall Heritage Hall.

Council was told last night it currently sits at about $84,000.

Mayor Tyler Hessel explains it was around $100,000 at one point and he thought it would go higher than that but they got some Federal funding that brought it down to the $84,000 figure.

The discussion started with a request for LED lighting in the hall and council eventually agreed to spend the extra money because it will save on operating cost and the building is a municipally-owned building so LED lighting will help their energy audit in the future.

Hessel adds there have been lessons learned in this process but also points out because it's a municipally-owned building and the municipality is responsible for the exterior of the building regardless of what is done with the interior it's not a project they could walk away from.

He adds the situation might be different if the building was privately owned.

Hessel also points out by renovating the hall they preserve the history of the building as well as providing space for a wide range of cultural events going forward.
