Georgian College Welcomes Ontario Budget OSAP Changes

The president and CEO of Georgian College welcomes new initiatives in the provincial budget to make post secondary education more affordable.

MaryLynn West-Moynes says affordability is key to putting education within reach of more local residents.

She says the geographic area served by Georgian College including the region served by the campus in Owen Sound has the fourth largest number of students making use of OSAP among all 24 public Ontario colleges.

She says the proposed changes will allow many postsecondary students to graduate with little or no debt.

The new program starts in the 2017/18 academic year.

The showcase pledge in the Liberal government's new budget is the introduction of an Ontario Student Grant that would pay for college or university tuition for students whose family incomes are $50,000 or less.

Many other students whose families have incomes of $83,000 or less will qualify for grants and the government says no student will receive less than they currently receive.
