OPP say Three Snowmobilers Died on Thin Ice

OPP are warning snowmobilers to stay off of lakes and rivers, after unsafe ice claimed the lives of three sledders on the weekend.

A snowmobiler and his passenger were travelling on a Georgian Bay area lake, and died after reportedly colliding with rocks on an island.

The victims had to be recovered by helicopter because of the dangerous ice conditions.

In the other incident, four snowmobilers went through the ice on a lake in the Haliburton region, and one drowned.

The late start to winter, and mild temperatures make the ice extremely hazardous.

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs recommends sledders stick to land based trails with bridges to cross water safely.
