MPP Thompson: Soaring Hydro Rates Bad For Province

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson is lashing out at the Wynne government on the heels of a report by Ontario Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk outlining soaring hydro rates in the province.

The report states electricity customers have had to pay $37-billion for the Liberal government's decisions to ignore its own planning process for new power projects.

Thompson says it's absolute mismanagement of the electricity file by the government.

"Households need to be prepared to see their household electricity rates continue to go on the rise, they (provincial liberal government) are not only going to bankrupt this province, they're going to drive everybody out of it as well," says Thompson.

She says Ontario produces so much surplus energy right now - enough to power the entire province of Manitoba.

But she adds at the current pace the Liberal government is going, it's going to amount to anything but good for Ontarians.

"On this current pace that we're on, we can expect home hydro bills to keep climbing up to as much as 68 per-cent by the year 2032 if we cannot get this energy file under control as well as this Liberal government," adds Thompson.

The auditor general of Ontario also included in her report Wednesday that ratepayers have had to pay for decisions made by the provincial government, stating that hydro bills rose by as much as 70 per-cent between 2006 and 2014.
