Central Huron Supports Plan To Use Former Bluewater Centre For Refugees

The mayor of Central Huron says he supports the efforts of a local group to bring Syrian refugees to Huron County and house them in the former Bluewater Detention Centre.

Jim Ginn quickly adds it will take a significant amount of money to get the buildings ready to provide acceptable living quarters and the municipality doesn't have that money.

But he adds 25,000 refugees is going to mean a lot of money on hotel rooms, so some of that money might as well be spent in fixing up the Bluewater Centre to make it easier to dispose of when the province does decide to sell it.

Ginn also points out at this time most of the money would be federal money so the province might be able to get the work done on the Bluewater Centre without spending any provincial dollars.

Ginn adds he hasn't heard anything directly from the province at this time.
