Sudanese Refugee Family Expected In Goderich This Month

Members of the Lakeshore United Church in Goderich are bringing a family of refugees to Goderich later this month.

Kate Ballagh-Steeper is a minister at the church and says they have been matched with a family of fourteen from South Sudan who have been in a refugee camp for at least 13 years.

Ballagh-Steeper explains the family had all of the clearances they needed and the only thing left was a sponsor.

She explains the federal government provides funding for the first six months and the church is providing funding for another six months as well as all of the other social, emotional and logistical support that will be needed.

The family is expected to arrive before the end of this month.

Ballagh-Steeper explains their team, called the Welcome Project, consists of about 25 volunteers organized into a variety of committees that will look after things like transportation, health care and education.
