Trick or Treat: Halloween Safety Tips

It's that spooky time of year, Halloween is once again upon us and local law enforcement officials have a few tips to help keep everyone safe.

Trick or treaters should wear costumes that are both comfortable and easy to see, either by reflective markings or by carrying a flashlight.

Parents should accompany small children at all times, stick to familiar neighbourhoods and inspect all treats before letting children eat them.

A few other tips for trick or treaters and parents/guardians:

  • If not accompanying your child, establish and know your child’s route and set curfew times.
  • Children should never trick or treat alone.
  • If possible, trick or treat in familiar neighbourhoods.
  • Do not criss-cross across roadways.
  • Walk, don’t run.
  • Avoid houses left in darkness.
  • Children should not enter anyone’s house without the presence of a parent or guardian.
Motorists are asked to slow down in residential neighbourhoods and watch for trick or treaters.

Police will be out conducting R.I.D.E. spot checks at various times and locations in communities throughout Midwestern Ontario.
