Grade Nine EQAO Math Results Released

Results for the Avon Maitland School Board show 87 per cent of academic students were again able to meet or exceed the standard.

In the applied math courses, 56 per cent of students made the grade or better. Thats up a few percentage points from the last round of testing.

Bluewater District School Grade 9 math test results from the Education Quality and Accountability Office are similar to last year's numbers.

Academic students continued to perform well with 80 per cent meeting or exceeding the provincial standard -- a slight decrease from last year.

51 per cent of applied students were at or above the standard, mirroring last year's results.

“Once again, we are proud of our students and the ongoing hard work by our educators and administrators in achieving success in both Academic and Applied Mathematics. We are committed to continuing our efforts to improve upon our current success,” says Superintendent of Education Lori Wilder.

The Bruce Grey Catholic District School board says Grade 9 students maintained a success rate of 76 per cent in academic math assessments from the Education Quality and Accountability Office.

The board says 51 per cent applied grade nine math students met or exceeded the provincial standard of Level 3.

The board plans to work with staff and students to identify successful strategies they can apply to mathematics programs.

Francine Pilon, Bruce Grey Catholice Superintendent of Education, notes that improving student achievement in Grade 9 Mathematics has been, and continues to be, a key focus with board.

“Analyzing student data is a critical tool we use to guide our progress," she says. "This will provide our staff with the next steps to ensure quality instruction for our students. We are very fortunate to work with staff that are committed and give their best to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve success. We have instructional coaches in both secondary schools to assist teachers in using data to inform the selection of the best instructional strategies for their students.”

Test results released today show students with the Upper Grand District School Board continue to exceed the provincial standards in mathematics.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office found Grade 9 math students with the Upper Grand have shown a considerable increase in achievement over previous years.

90 per cent of academic students met or exceeded the standard, up from 88 per cent the previous years.

In applied, 67 per cent met the standard, which is up 8 per cent from last year.

The province will not release provincial data this year because some boards did not participate in the testing, but in the past five years Upper Grand results were above he provincial average by 2 to 4 per cent.

1,536 academic students took the test, as well as 758 applied students.

“Our Grade 9 math test results this year are a testament to our hard working staff, and their implementation of our board's long term improvement strategies. Congratulations both to them and to our students,” says Mark Bailey, chair of the board. “We look forward to future results as we adapt and improve our strategies even further."

Males were marginally more successful in the academic course with 92 per cent at or above the standard, compared to 89 per cent of females.

In the applied testing, 68 per cent of females met or exceeded the standard, while 66 per cent of males did.

“I would like to offer my congratulations to our hardworking students and my sincere thanks to our dedicated staff for achieving these great results,” says Martha Rogers, director of education at the Upper Grand District School Board.
