Huron Food & Drink Strategy Set to Launch

The Huron Tourism Association along with Huron County, the Huron Manufacturing Association and the Huron Food Action Network are launching a new program tomorrow night at the White Carnation in Holmesville.

They're inviting local food businesses, farmers, producers, restaurants and other interested party to the launch of the Huron Food and Drink Strategy.

HTA President Kim Burgsma explains Huron is home to wide variety of food and drink producers and the goal is to bring them all together to take advantage of what each one of them can bring to the table.

"We've got wineries coming up, there's cideries, there's juice businesses, our roasted coffee, there's some really great things that we have and not everyone is aware of them yet, we've got great restaurants who are serving local products and we want to feature them especially," says Burgsma.

Burgsma says they want to encourage as much local farm to table product as possible to they're talking to producers to see who is market-ready now and who would like to go beyond what they're currently doing to get market-ready.

"We're also meeting with all of the producers in Huron County to see which ones are market ready and which ones would like to offer more than just at the farmers' market but direct to restaurants as well," adds Burgsma.

The local food strategy will be done in three phases, notes Burgsma. She says phase one will be assessing the market while phase two will be product development and phase three will be branding and marketing.
