Flu Arrives In Huron County

The first laboratory confirmed case of Influenza A has arrived in Huron County.

The health unit says the flu shot is available to help protect people.

There are also limited quantities of a new FluMist nasal spray live vaccine for children, so priority will be given to kids aged 2-5.

Public health Nurse Susan Hart says immunization will reduce your chances of becoming ill with the flu, and if you still get sick, symptoms will be milder.

The flu shot is available at your doctor or pharmacy

In Perth County, there is a flu shot clinic taking place in Listowel tomorrow - Saturday, October 24, from 8:30am-3:30pm at the Fisher Family Primary Care Centre at 185 Inkerman St. E.

The Huron County Health unit has also set up a flu shot clinic at the Royal Canadian Legion in Clinton next Wednesday, October 28 from 3pm to 6pm.

Another clinic will be held at the Seaforth Community Centre Monday November 2, at the same time.

Flu is a highly contagious viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs. It causes sudden fever, sore throat, chills, a dry cough, muscle aches, headaches, and fatigue. The illness can last for up to a week, but the tired feeling can last for two weeks, and the cough for even longer.

Seniors and people with chronic health conditions can develop complications of the flu, such as pneumonia.

The virus spreads easily from person to person through tiny droplets from the nose and throat.

You can also protect yourself by washing your hands often.

You can protect others by sneezing into your sleeve, and staying home when sick.
