Senior Wins Again At Meaford-St. Vincent Fall Fair

Among the many winners at this year’s Meaford-St. Vincent Fall Fair is a senior citizen who set a record in the number of years she’s entered quilts, home baking and other homecrafts - and won prizes for them.

This year marked the the 60th year that Helen Vickers has taken part in competitions at the M.SV. Fall Fair.

She first took part in contests at the fair in 1955 when she was 30 and has taken part in the fair every fall since then.

MSV Agriculture Society secretary Holly Feighen says that for many years, Vickers' took part in many classes - quilts, preserves, baking, clothing, flowers and other items, "and she won prizes in most of them."

While she took part in only one class this year, Floriculture, Vickers’ entries won her the most points at the fair in that class.

Vickers is now 90 and, while she needs a walker to get around, she intends to take part in fall fair contests as long as possible.

Other top winners at this year's Meaford Fall Fair include Feighen, who won the most points for the vegetables she entered.

Nancy Hamilton won the most points in the Amateur Crafts class while Marion Mower was named the Grand Champion for the quilt she entered.

Marriane Reid won the most points in the Household Furnishings class while Nita Irwin won top marks for her entries in Infants and Childrens’ Wear.

Nicole Baker won most points in the Canning and Preserves Jams and Jellies class.

Leita Peacock won the most points for the photos she entered in the Amateur Photography class.
