Point Clark Lighthouse Reopens

The Point Clark Lighthouse is once again open to the public.

Huron-Bruce M-P Ben Lobb made the official announcement at a ceremony Saturday after the lighthouse had been shut down for six years for repair work.

Lobb says in 2009 the lighthouse was deemed unsafe because some of the huge limestone rocks were deteriorating.

Lobb adds part of the reason for the delay in getting the work done was that every time contractors started working on the lighthouse they found the deterioration was worse than the engineers had predicted.

That problem was compounded by the fact the stones are about the size of a bathtub and they had to find ones that would last one or even 200 years.

So, after three work plans in six years and at a cost of 3.7-million-dollars visitors can once again climb up to the top of the Port Clark Lighthouse.
