Georgian's Owen Sound Marine Training Centre Gets New Funding

Georgian College in Owen Sound is receiving federal and provincial funding to build its new Marine Emergency Training Centre.

The province and the feds are each contributing two million dollars to the project.

Georgian's president MaryLynn West-Moynes says the training would be for marine students as well as employed mariners from outside the area for safety training re-certification.

"We are the only college in Ontario that does marine training and what that does it stabilizes that this is the point of destination for the rest of Ontario for training in a great industry," said West-Moynes at reception at Georgian College where the funding announcement was made.

She credits MP Larry Miller and MPP Bill Walker for helping get the project off the ground.

Grey County has already committed two million dollars to the total 7.9 million dollar cost of the project. West-Moynes says that support was crucial.

Former Grey County Warden Brian Milne," The whole notion of tying the harbour and the college and mariners' training together, it made a lot of sense. If there was ever was a no brainer to invest in economic development this was it."

Work is expected to start next spring on Georgian's new Marine Emergency Training Centre, with the opening in the fall of 2016.
