OFAH Wants Better Bear Management

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters says the province needs better bear management.

A black bear was spotted in Port Elgin on Tuesday at Joseph St. and Highland. Another bear was spotted near Kincardine last weekend, and a bear in a Newmarket subdivision had to be shot last week.

The OFAH is calling for the return of the spring bear hunt to support sustainable black bear populations.

OFAH Senior Wildlife Biologist Mark Ryckman says the trap and transer part of the province's Bear Wise program was unsuccessful and was expensive to run.

But he adds the information part of the program is useful to residents, providing tips on bear proofing and what to do if a bear is spotted nearby.

The OFAH is the largest non-profit fish and wildlife conservation-based organization in Ontario.
