Huron Health Unit Urges Sun Safety

The Huron County Health Unit marks Sun Awareness Week with a reminder for residents to practice sun safety.

Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Owen, says although everyone enjoys being outdoors, too much UV radiation can lead to skin cancer.

She says people should limit time spent in the sun, especially between the hours of 11am and 4pm. And children are at an even higher risk of sunburn because their skin is thinner.

You can limit exposure by trying to stay in the shade, and wearing sun protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.

Sunscreen and lip balm with sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher is important, along with sunglasses that offer UV protection.

The Medical Officer of Health also recommends you check your skin on a regular basis for moles that have changed shape, size or colour.

Any skin spots that have changed colour or shape should be shown to your doctor.
