Rural Maternity Wards Declining in Huron and Perth

A declining rural population and a declining rural birth rate has forced some smaller hospitals to close their maternity wards.Huron-Perth Healthcare Alliance C-E-O Andrew Williams explains Obstetrics was recently discontinued in Clinton and moved to the Stratford General Hospital.

They currently have about twelve-hundred deliveries a year at the Stratford hospital.   Goderich provides obstetric service in Huron County.

Williams points out that today’s nurses and physicians who graduate with a speciality want to go to a hospital where the volume is such that they’ll be able to practice that speciality and retain the skills they trained for.

He says if that volume isn’t there,  they’ll will go elsewhere.
