Brockton Drops Voting Irregularities Investigation

Brockton Council has decided not to proceed with an investigation into alleged violations of the Municipal Elections Act.

Council passed a motion last night, stating "There is no action to move forward with any further investigation, but to educate electors on the importance of making sure that they are added or removed from the list if they are not eligible." The motion adds that it is a corrupt practice to vote when not eligible.

At a public meeting last month, Deputy Mayor Dan Gieruszak and resident Barb Klages alleged that about 80 people voted using someone elses credentials, or knowing they were not eligible to vote.

Gieruszak says he heard rumours of ineligible voting through general conversation in the community, and specific names were not used. Clerk Debra Roth says the complaints are not valid because there are no names to investigate.
