Goderich Township Seeks Smaller Farm Lot Severances

Huron County councillors have resolved a concern over the size of agricultural lots that can be severed.

The county's official plan had set the limit at half a lot, and since the standard lot is 100 acres in most municipalities, that meant the minimum for a severance would be fifty acres.

But Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn pointed out that the standard lot size in the former Goderich Township ward of his municipality has historically been 80 acres.

Ginn proposed adjusting the official plan to allow 40-acre severances to conform with Goderich Township's standard and council agreed.

Ginn also pointed out the difference of ten acres could mean as much as 150-thousand dollars in the price of a lot so allowing the smaller lot would make it easier for young people to get involved in farming.

The change still has to come back to County Council for final approval.
