Medical Marijuana Plan Faces Little Opposition in Owen Sound

A proposal to grow medical marijuana in Owen Sound is getting little feedback -- neither for or against.

At a city council public meeting on the issue, no one questioned company representatives on the plan.

Toronto based Canadian Bioceutical Corporation plans to convert 150 thousand square feet of an empty factory in Owen Sound to produce medical marihuana.

Company president Scott Boyes says they've applied to Health Canada for a licence and hope to have that approved this spring. He says security at the facility will be extensive.

"Hundreds of cameras, motion detectors, alarm systems, on site guards, ten foot security fence with barbed wire, it's incredible almost a million dollars worth of equipment just for security," said Boyes. He expects the demand for medical marijuana to expand.

" As science more and more proves the validity, the efficacy of cannabis infused products in treating a myriad of diseases the demand is going to grow."

Boyes expects once it's up and running the medical marijuana operation will create at least one hundred jobs to start.

The public meeting was part of the process for the company to get required zoning changes in Owen Sound to proceed. City staff is expected to report back to council in March.
