Wiarton Willie Predicts an Early Spring

Wiarton Willie emerged from hibernation this morning to deliver his Groundhog Day prediction.

The famous albino groundhog braved an extreme cold warning and did not see his shadow, predicting spring is just six weeks away.

It was newly-elected South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson's first Groundhog Day as Willie's official interpreter and she says it was an honour to share the stage with Wiarton Willie.

"That was fantastic, I loved every minute of it. This is just the best town in the whole wide world and I'm so proud to be mayor. It was fun, I had a great time, I hope the prediction is bang on, an early spring, [I've] kind of had enough of the winter. But it was wonderful," says Jackson.

Next year will be the 60th anniversary of the Wiarton Willie Festival and Jackson says she wants to see the community go all-out to celebrate its famous groundhog.
