Grey County Resident Out $30K In Romance Scam

The Grey County OPP are urging residents to be aware of potential romance scams after a local resident lost over $30,000 to a fraudster they had met on-line.

Police are warning of online users you have never met who quickly try to develop a relationship, often professing their love after a period of time.

Many of these scammers develop a relationship with the victim to gain trust before asking for money.

Police warn many claim to be located in another country eventually seeking money to cover travel to meet the victim.

Other variations include the fraudster presenting situations of emergency, or urgency, such as a sick family member and then seek financial assistance from the victim for various costs.

In 2014 alone, Canadians lost almost $14-million to these types of scams.
