New Smoking Restrictions In Ontario Start Tomorrow

Three significant changes to the Smoke Free Ontario Act come into effect tomorrow.

Huron County Tobacco Enforcement Officer Patrick Landry explains that smoking will be prohibited within 20 m of any playground area, sporting area, spectator area or adjacent sporting areas.

There will also be a ban on smoking on any bar or restaurant patio, regardless of whether it's covered, partly covered or open.

The third change is a ban on the sale of tobacco on college or university campuses.

Landry adds it's also illegal for anyone under the age of 19 to purchase tobacco products. Retailers are required to ask for ID before selling tobacco products to anyone under the age of 25.
