Caressant Care Plan Could Strengthen Harriston Nursing Home

A company spokesperson for Caressant Care nursing home says moving some beds out of their Harriston home could help increase the quality of care.

The issue was brought up at Minto Council this week and led to some negative feed back from councillors. But Lee Griffi, manager of corporate communications of Caressant Care, says if the home is at 97% capacity then there is an opportunity to get top up funding from the government.  But that's not the case right now.

"If you're are under 97%, you are funded at actual," says Griffi.  "What this will allow us to do is to have 80 beds in Harriston, which will allow us to ideally keep them full, above that 97% mark, which makes for a much stronger home altogether."

Griffi says the Caressant Care nursing home in Harriston has only reached 97% three times in the past decade.  By moving the nine beds, Griffi says it would create an opportunity to re-focus resources on care, including more consistent staffing schedules.

Griffi adds most of the residents in the nursing home are not from the area.

A public meeting about moving nine nursing bed homes out of Harriston is set for November 25 at the library at 10am.
