Harriston Losing Nursing Home Beds

Minto council is not happy that Caressant Care nursing home in Harriston wants to take nine of its 89 bed from Harriston and use them for a new development in Cambridge.

A public meeting on on the proposal will be held November 25 at 10am at the Harriston Library.

Minto councilor Mary-Lou Colwell says once the beds are lost to the community, there is no getting them back.

She says the Harriston beds are always full and Minto should make its position known at the public meeting. She says the Minto Chamber of Commerce will be making itself heard at the public meeting.

"People are staying in hospital longer because they can’t find long term care facilities," Minto Deputy Mayor Terry Fisk. "I’m concerned that we are taking nine of these long term care beds out of our community and going to the city with them."
