Huron Shoreline Water Testing Results Mixed

Thirteen years of water quality testing in streams and rivers along the shoreline north of Goderich have produced some encouraging, if not somewhat conflicting results.

The testing has been spearheaded by cottage owner Mike McElhone on behalf of the cottage associations along the shoreline. It’s supported by the associations, Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, and the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority.

A-C-W Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek says this year’s report indicates conditions have not improved significantly, but they have not deteriorated either.

The results show water quality is worse during period of heavy rainfall or very wet periods because there is more runoff from the land. However, Van Diepenbeek notes the water quality was better in the Maitland River and the Nine Mile River when there was more volume and stronger flows.
