Sauble Beach Land Claim In Mediation
South Bruce Peninsula council has confirmed it is meeting with a mediator in an attempt to settle an ongoing land claim in Sauble Beach.
Administrator Jacquie Farrow-Lawrence says the town is in mediation with Saugeen Ojibway Nation over its land claim, which was filed in 1994.
She says a confidentiality agreement is in place that prevents the two sides from discussing the talks, but adds council will not sign off on any agreement without first taking it to the public for consultation.
South Bruce Peninsula council has rejected a request by the Friends of Sauble Beach, who asked for an opportunity to make a presentation to council on the land claim.
Mayor John Close says the decision was based on legal advice related to the confidentiality agreement.
